Softball Splits on Day Two of Cathedral City Classic

Cathedral City, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team split on day two of the Cathedral City Classic, falling in an extra innings heartbreaker to No. 16 Ohio State, 8-7, in eight innings but rebounding with a 4-2 win over Syracuse on Saturday evening.

Junior Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a pair of runs to pace the Beavers’ offense, but Oregon State came up just short, falling to No. 16 Ohio State, 8-7, in an extra innings heartbreaker.


Oregon State opened up the game, scoring three runs on one hit. Roderfeld hit her second home run of the season to clear the bases after sophomore Ashley Sanchez (Alameda, Calif.) led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Mary Claire Brenner (Portland, Ore.) walked to put runners on the corners before a throw to third resulted in an error, allowing Sanchez to score. Roderfeld then bombed one to left center on the next pitch seen.


The Beavers tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third on a RBI double by Roderfeld before sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) tallied a pair of RBI for herself on a double to right center, giving Oregon State the 6-0 lead.


The Buckeyes put a run on the board in the top of the fourth on a RBI double, adding another on the sixthon a solo leadoff home run to cut the lead to 6-2.


Oregon State added another run in the bottom of the sixth with another Roderfeld RBI with a single up the middle to score senior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.), who earned a one-out single.

But Ohio State answered back in a big way in the top of the seventh, tying the game on a Rachael Shepherd RBI single before a grand slam by Alicia Herron. The Buckeyes were able to manufacture another run in the top of the eighth, while the Beavers left their runner on third as the game ended.


Hall was charged with the complete game loss after fanning seven, making her record 3-8. Megan Miller, who came in relief for Melanie Nichols after 2.1 innings, earned the win, improving to 4-1.

Syracuse 4, Oregon State 2


Junior McKenna Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) led the Oregon State offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while senior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.) earned the team’s only RBI as the Beavers defeated Syracuse, 4-2, on Saturday evening.


Syracuse struck first in the third inning on a Veronica Grant RBI single before Oregon State answered with a three-run fifth inning, scoring sophomore Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, Alberta) on a throwing error and sophomores Nikki Chandler (Houston, Texas) and Ashley Sanchez (Alameda, Calif.) on wild pitches.


The Orange threatened in the top of the sixth, adding another run on Hallie Gibbs single, but the Beavers tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning on Chisholm’s RBI to end the game in favor of Oregon State.


Senior Kelly Dyer (Eugene, Ore.) earned the complete game win with six strikeouts, giving up only one earned run. Jenna Caira was charged with the loss, dropping her record to 0-4.
