Frederick Takes Third At USA Indoors
Feb. 28, 2010
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A number of Husky track luminaries were in action this weekend at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Nine-time All-American and 2008 grad Norris Frederick placed third in the long jump to lead the UW contingent.
Frederick, now competing for Asics, was entered in both the high jump and the long jump, as was his standard procedure during college. On Saturday he placed eighth in the high jump with a clearance of 7-1 ½, then came back today to take third in the long jump with a mark of 25-10 ¾ which was just two inches short of the winning mark of Jeremy Hicks.
Current Husky senior Falesha Ankton, who only has outdoor eligibility remaining, completed her indoor season at USAs in the 60-meter hurdles. Ankton was in the opposite semifinal heat from another Husky great, Ashley Lodree. Ankton took sixth in her eight-woman semifinal in 8.44 seconds, while Lodree was fourth in her semi and advanced to the final later in the day. In the final, the 2007 grad and five-time All-American placed eighth.
Two-time NCAA Champ Ryan Brown, a 2009 World Championships participant and current volunteer assistant coach at UW, was third in his 800-meter preliminary heat on Saturday and did not advance. Also competing was former UW four-minute-miler Eric Garner, who placed 15th in the 3,000-meter run.
Many of the top contenders at these championships prepared for competition with appearances at the Dempsey Indoor over the past couple months. The list includes high jump champion Jesse Williams, 1,500-meter runner-up Shannon Rowbury, and top-five 3k finishes Galen Rupp, Chris Solinsky, and Scott Bauhs, among others.
