Washington State's Jones Named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week
March 1, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- WASHINGTON STATE sophomore outfielder Derek Jones has been named the Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and OREGON STATE junior right-handed pitcher Greg Peavey has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 22-28, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Jones of Snohomish, Wash., was named the Most Valuable Player of the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Texas after leading the Cougars to a 4-0 record. Jones went 7-for-16 for a .438 batting average. The sophomore outfielder hit safely in all four games during the tournament with a double, two home runs, three RBI, a stolen base and seven runs scored. His best performance of the weekend came in WSU’s 6-3 win over Bethune-Cookman when he homered twice and scored three times.
This marks the second-career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Jones and Washington State’s 63rd all-time Player of the Week Selection.
Peavey was masterful in his only performance of the week, throwing his first-career shutout in a 1-0 victory over Tennessee. A native of Vancouver, Wash., Peavey scattered just three hits, stuck out a career-high nine batters and did not allow a Volunteer baserunner to get past second base. He dropped his ERA from 3.60 to 0.64 and was the first Beaver pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout this season.
This is the first-career Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week selection for Peavey and the 59th all-time honoree for Oregon State.
