10th-ranked Golden Bears Take Out Utah, 6-1
March 2, 2010
BERKELEY - The 10th-ranked California men's tennis team (8-2) grabbed a 6-1 win over Utah (4-6) on Tuesday (March 2) at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears claimed first-set victories on five out of six singles courts and went on to clinch the win as No. 42-ranked junior Pedro Zerbini completed a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Phillip Eilers at the top singles court.
Because of potentially inclement weather conditions, the teams agreed to play singles matches first. Freshman Riki McLachlan was the first one off the court as he finished off Dmytro Mamedov at the fifth court in one hour, 6-0, 6-1. Cal earned its second point at court four when junior Bozhidar Katsarov defeated Timmy Allin, 6-3, 6-3. The Utes got on the board next with a win at court six. Utah's Stephen Jacobs claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory over senior Bijan Hejazi to breathe life into Utah's chances.
The Bears responded to go up, 3-1, as No. 59-ranked freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt dismissed Jason Smits at the second singles court, 6-3, 6-1. Zerbini's match-clinching victory came next to give Cal a 4-1 edge. As the only match to go three sets, No. 3 singles went in favor of the Bears as sophomore Nick Andrews came up with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win against Alex Golding.
With the match decided, the teams played just two doubles matches. Sophomore Sky Lovill joined McLachlan at the top court to face the top Utah team of Eilers and Golding. In their first match as a pair, Lovill and McLachlan earned an 8-5 win over the Utes. At the second doubles court, Hejazi and Katsarov got together and took an 8-4 victory against Jacobs and Benito Suriano to give Cal its sixth point of the day.
The Bears will head to Southern California this weekend to face No. 36 Michigan (3-5) in a neutral-site dual at the Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., at 1 p.m. PT on Thursday, March 4. Then, the team will split up into doubles teams to participate in the USTA's 121st annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championship hosted by the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, Calif.
