No. 19 UCLA Baseball Downs Waseda University, 6-4, in Exhibition Game

LOS ANGELES - The No. 19 UCLA baseball team registered a 6-4 victory over Waseda University (Japan) in an exhibition game at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday evening. Right-hander Garett Claypool registered six strikeouts and scattered three hits in three innings as the Bruins' starting pitcher.
Shortstop Cody Regis and designated hitter Blair Dunlap each went 2-for-3 in the victory. Pinch-hitter Dennis Holt stepped up with a game-winning three-RBI double in the seventh inning and led all players with three RBI.
Six UCLA pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts and two walks through nine innings.
Right-hander Scott Griggs picked up the victory, allowing two runs and one hit in one inning of relief. Waseda right-hander Yuki Saito was charged with the loss, surrendering four runs and three hits in two frames of relief.
Waseda was led on offense by first baseman Koji Udaka and second baseman Hiroki Matsunaga, as each player went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
UCLA led 2-0 after scoring one run in the first inning and another in the third. A one-out single to center field by Dunlap plated center fielder Beau Amaral, who led off the opening frame with a walk. In the third inning, second baseman Adrian Williams reached on a fielding error, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a bunt single by Dunlap.
Waseda scored one run in the fifth inning, cutting UCLA's margin to 2-1. Center fielder Koki Sasaki led off with a bunt single before advancing to second base on a passed ball. Sasaki moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an infield single by Matsunaga.
Waseda claimed a 3-2 lead with a two-run seventh inning. With two outs and runners in scoring position, third baseman Yuya Watanabe lined a two-RBI single to right field, scoring shortstop Takashi Goto and Matsunaga.
The Bruins scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to assume a 6-3 cushion. After a sacrifice fly by Amaral plated shortstop Cody Regis from third base to tie the game, Holt lined a three-run double to the gap in left-center field. Holt's two-bagger scored right fielder Jeff Gelalich, Williams and catcher Tyler Heineman.
Waseda added one run in the top of the eighth on a solo home run to left field by first baseman Koji Udaka.
UCLA returns to the diamond against Nebraska on Friday, March 5. The Bruins and Cornhuskers are scheduled to play a three-game series at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium. First pitch on Friday is 6 p.m., while Saturday's game will begin at 2 p.m. and Sunday's series finale will start at 11 a.m.
