March 2, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - OREGON freshman Allie Burger has been named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week and WASHINGTON senior Danielle Lawrie has been named Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 22-28, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Burger, a left fielder from Spokane, Wash., led the Ducks in batting (.800, 8-for-10), hits (8), total bases (8-tied), slugging (.800) and on-base percentage (.818) at the Cathedral City Classic, in Cathedral City, Calif., where the Ducks posted a 4-0 record on the weekend. Burger was the only Duck to hit safely in all four games over the weekend, including three muli-hit games and one 3-for-3 outing in a win over Long Island. Against then-No. 19 Texas A&M, Burger knocked in the game-winning RBI in the sixth inning and added an RBI in the win over Hawai’i. Burger is currently on a five-game hitting streak.
Lawrie, went 4-0 over the weekend at the Cathedral City Classic, defeating three ranked teams along the way. In 23.0 innings the Langley, British Columbia native struck out 37 batters and walked just three. Against No. 25 BYU, she pitched a six inning one-hitter, striking out 10 batters to move into eighth all-time in NCAA history and fourth in Pac-10 history in career strikeouts. Against No. 9 Oklahoma, Lawrie allowed just seven hits while striking out nine and helped her cause with a two-run home run of her own at the plate. Against No. 19 Fresno State, Lawrie tallied eight strike outs and allowed just two runs on three hits, while going 2-for-3 with three RBI at the plate, including her team-leading eighth home run on the year. Closing out the weekend, Lawrie earned the win over Oklahoma State in relief, throwing the final five innings and striking out 10 to earn her fourth win on the weekend, ninth win overall. Lawrie has amassed 102 strikeouts in 56 innings pitched to earn a 9-0 record.
This is the first Pac-10 Player of the Week accolade for Burger and the 30th all-time for Oregon. For Lawrie this is her 12th career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor, good for third-most all-time in Pac-10 history. For Washington this is its 62nd Player of the Week honor.
