Watch Highlights From Stanford's First Spring Practice

March 2, 2010

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford began spring workouts on Monday wth a 2:20 minute workout on Elliott Field.

The Cardinal participated in a wide variety of drills on day one. Quarterback Andrew Luck, who missed the Sun Bowl with a broken finger, threw effortlessly, connecting with familiar targets Ryan Whalen and Chris Owusu.

Owen Marecic, Stanford's starting fullback for the past three seasons, worked out exclusively with the first team defense at the middle linebacker position.

Alex Loukas, a reserve quarterback over his first three seasons at Stanford, returned to the field after sitting out all of last season with an injury -- albeit at a new position. He is working out at safety this spring and opened eyes with an interception in passing drills.

Delano Howell and Johnson Bademosi also came away with interceptions.

Running backs Jeremy Stewart and Stepfan Taylor took the majority of reps during practice, but were joined by sophomore Tyler Gaffney, who dressed out for practice on an off day from baseball.

Four new coaches -- Vic Fangio (defensive coordinator/linebackers), Randy Hart (defensive line), Derek Mason (secondary) and Brian Polian (special teams coordinator) -- worked with their respective units for the first time.
