March 3, 2010
THE MEET ... Oregon State's 6th-ranked gymnastics team (10-1) remains on the road this week to take on No. 10 LSU (5-4-1) at the Maravich Center, Friday at 5 p.m. PST. This week's trip is the third of four straight road trips to face top 25 teams for the Beavers - (UCLA, ASU, LSU and Utah) and is the first-ever trip to Baton Rouge for Oregon State ... the meet will be televised via tape delay on Cox Sports Television (CST). The meet will air Saturday, Mar. 13 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
THE SERIES ... The Beavers trail the all-time series with the Tigers 5-8-1 and have lost the last four meetings. Oregon State's last win against LSU came at the 1994 NCAA Championships. The two teams met last year at the NCAA North Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio, with LSU finishing first (196.875) and the Beavers second (196.800) with both teams advancing to the championship.
WHAT'S COMING UP ... Next week, Oregon State completes its string of road meets when the Orange & Black travels to Salt Lake City to face a triumvirate of top 25 teams in Utah, Penn State and Southern Utah next Friday, Mar. 12.
IN THE RANKINGS ... All four of Oregon State's lineups are ranked in this week's Top 10. The Beavers are ranked eighth on vault, fourth on the uneven bars, fourth on the balance beam and third on the floor exercise ... in addition, several OSU gymnasts are ranked among the top 15 in the nation: Mandi Rodriguez (9.910 average) is tied for fifth and Becky Colvin (9.890) is 11th on vault; Laura-Ann Chong (9.900) is second on bars; Rodriguez (9.855) is tied for 15th on the beam; Rodriguez (9.890) is tied for eighth on the floor; Rodriguez is tied for seventh in the all-around (39.370).
UPDATES FROM THE PRACTICE GYM ... Freshman Makayla Stambaugh (ankle) has only performed on two events - vault and bars - in each of the last two meets, but is expected to go in the all-around this week at LSU ... Freshman Kelsi Blalock, who sprained her ankle during warm-ups last month at California, has resumed practicing in the gym. She will not travel with the team to LSU this week ... Freshman Leilani Alferos will be sidelined for a couple weeks after a bicycle accident last Monday.
TICKETS ... Tickets for the 2010 season are on sale for the final home meet of the season.
The Beavers are scheduled to face Kentucky (Mar. 19).
Individual meet tickets are also available by calling 1-800-GO-BEAVS, in person at the OSU Ticket Office located in room 107 of Gill Coliseum or by going online to osubeavers.com.
LAST TIME ON THE FLOOR ... The Beavers posted a season-high, and the fourth-highest road score in OSU history, last Friday at Arizona State earning a 196.925-194.650 win in Tempe ... the score is made more impressive when one considers Makayla Stambaugh competed only two events and Mandi Rodriguez, who is an All-American on floor, fell, leaving the Beavers without three scores they would normally count ... for the fourth straight week, the Beavers did not count a fall ... Rodriguez scored 9.925 on the vault to win the individual title ... Stambaugh scored a career-best 9.925 on the bars to win the individual title ... Laura-Ann Chong and Rodriguez scored 9.90 on the beam to tie for the title. The score matched Rodriguez's career-high, which was set the previous week at UCLA.
