UC Riverside Upsets Fifth-Ranked Bruins

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Junior Monica Harrison went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, while senior Megan Langenfeld hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season, but fifth-ranked UCLA was stunned by UC Riverside 3-2 on Wednesday at Amy S. Harrison Field.

The Bruins fall to 14-4 on the season, while the Highlanders improve to 5-9.

UCLA had seven hits as a team. In the circle, freshman Destiny Rodino (1-1) started and allowed three runs and five hits in 2 1/3 innings with one strikeout. Sophomore Aleah Macon tossed one inning, giving up two hits and a walk with one strikeout, while Langenfeld pitched 2 2/3 frames and allowed one hit.

The Bruins scored twice in the top of the first. With one out, Monica Harrison doubled to center, and one out later, Langenfeld hit a home run to left to make it 2-0.

The Highlanders took the lead with three in the bottom of the third. Brooke Hebenton led off with a double to left-center and moved to third one out later on a single to left by Kameryn Hebenton. With Taylor Thomas at the plate, Brooke Hebenton scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1 and Thomas followed with a double to left-center to bring in Kameryn Hebenton to tie the game. Marissa Alvidrez then tripled to right to bring home Thomas and put Riverside on top 3-2.

UCLA had baserunners in every inning, but were unable to get the equalizer, leaving four on base.

The Bruins travel to the San Diego Classic this weekend. On Friday, UCLA faces #21 Fresno State at 2 p.m. at the USD Softball Complex. The Bruins play at the SDSU Softball Stadium on Saturday and Sunday, facing UTEP (11:30 a.m.) and Long Beach State (7 p.m.) on Saturday and Buffalo (11:30 a.m.) and San Diego State (2 p.m.) on Sunday.
