Michigan Upsets No. 10 California Men's Tennis

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - The 10th-ranked California men's tennis team (8-3) came out on the short end of a 5-2 match against No. 36 Michigan (4-5) on Thursday (March 4) at the Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. The Golden Bears got wins at the first and sixth singles courts for their two points and also claimed victory on the top doubles court. No. 42-ranked junior Pedro Zerbini earned his eighth dual-match victory as he came up with a three-set win (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) against No. 46 Jason Jung at No. 1 singles.
The Wolverines struck first as Chris Cha and Chris Madden finished up an 8-3 win over sophomore Sky Lovill and freshman Riki McLachlan at the third doubles court. Cal surrendered the doubles point as George Navas and Mike Sroczynski upset the Bears' No. 20-ranked duo of sophomore Nick Andrews and freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt. With the first point decided, the 30th-ranked duo of Zerbini and junior Jonathan Dahan earned an 8-7 win over Michigan's 35th-ranked team of Jung and Evan King with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker.
The Bears landed the first punch in singles matches as McLachlan knotted the score at one-all with his 6-3, 6-0 win against Cha at court six. But the Wolverines took the next shot and went up, 2-1, as Sroczynski defeated No. 73 Dahan, 6-4, 6-4 at court three. Michigan took a 3-1 lead as junior Bozhidar Katsarov surrendered a 7-5, 6-2 win to Navas at court five.
King provided the clinching point in his 6-4, 7-5 upset of No. 59 Konigsfeldt at the second singles court. Michigan scored its fifth point in a tight match won by Madden at court four as he took out Andrews, 6-3, 7-6. Zerbini earned Cal's second point to complete play as he took out Jung at the top court.
