Freshman Clement Lefert and sophomore Patrick White finished second and third, respectively, in the 500y free to highlight efforts for No. 14 USC on the second day of the 2010 Pac-10 Swimming Championships on Thursday (March 4) at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif.
Lefert finished second in 4:16.70, a USC season best, while White was third in 4:18.63. White's prelim time of 4:18.15 was a personal best. Stanford's David Mosko won the race in 4:14.53. Lefert was virtually tied with Mosko with 100 yards to go, but the Cardinal swimmer was able to pull away over the final four laps of the race.
Both Lefert's and White's times improved their NCAA `B' cuts. First-year Trojan Richard Charlesworth did the same in winning the 500y free consolation final in 4:19.41, a season best.
Sophomore Jeff Daniels made his first career Pac-10 finals appearance, taking fifth in the 50y free in 19.76. His prelim time of 19.72 made him the fourth fastest Trojan ever in the race and was a personal best as well as an NCAA `B' cut.
Junior Emmett Walling won the consolation final of the 50y free in 19.74 (NCAA `B' cut), making him the fifth fastest Trojan. He improved on his prelim time of 19.95.
Senior James Martin (1:48.20) and junior Dillon Connolly (1:48.21) took 15th and 16th, respectively, in the 200y IM to lead Trojan finishers. They went 1:47.77 and 1:47.72, respectively, in prelims, season bests for both and NCAA `B' cuts.
The 200y free relay of Daniels, Walling, White and Lefert took fourth in a season-best 1:18.59, an NCAA `B' cut and 0.48 off of the school record set last year.
Stanford is in first (307) and is followed by Cal (225), Arizona (222), USC (212) and ASU (115).
The meet continues Friday and Saturday. Prelims begin at 11 a.m. and finals start at 6 p.m. each day. Friday features the 400y IM, 100y fly, 200y free, 100y breast, 100y back and 400y medley relay. Saturday's finale includes the 200y back, 100y free, 200y breast, 200y fly, a timed final of the 1650y free and the 400y free relay.
Scores from Pac-10 Diving Championships, which was held last week, are added to team scores after each day. USC sophomore Harrison Jones won a conference title on 3-meter. The win was USC's 28th Pac-10 title and its first on a springboard event since 1999. Jones also finished second on platform and was fifth on 1-meter. Junior Steven Starks was sixth on platform, marking the third time he finished in the top six in the event at the Pac-10s. He also reached the final on 3-meter.
