Cougars Finish Opening Round of Border Olympics

March 5, 2010

LAREDO, Texas - The Washington State University men's golf team is in seventh place after the first day of competition Friday at the Border Olympics, held at the par-72, 7,241-yard Laredo Country Club.

The Cougars ended the first round in a tie for 11th but moved up the leaderboard during the afternoon round by posting a 5-under-par 288. The team will tee off tomorrow only four strokes out of fourth place and seven strokes behind second-place Oklahoma.

'We really did not play that bad in the morning,' said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams. 'We just finished poorly and gave up ten strokes on the last three holes. The guys made a good run in the afternoon and got us back in the hunt and hopefully we can make another run up the leaderboard tomorrow morning.'

Senior Austin Hurt led the way for the Cougars finishing in a tie for 13th with a two-round total of 145 (+1). His second round of 68 (-4) is tied for the best this season.

Trent Sanders is close behind the senior leader after posting a 146 (+2) at the end of two rounds of play. The sophomore is coming off a final-round 66 at the WSU Snowman Getaway last week and was one off that Friday when he carded a 67 (-4) during the second round. The sophomore will tee off tomorrow in a tie for 16th.

Nick Ellis, Nick Grigsby and Kevin Tucker are a stroke apart after the opening day and will look to move up the standings tomorrow. Ellis came in at 150 (T-36), while Grigsby and Tucker finished at 151 (T-42) and 152 (T-49), respectively.

Even though WSU is in the middle of tournament field, beating teams ranked in the top 50 can go a long way to boost a resume heading toward the postseason. The Cougars are currently one shot behind No. 31 Arkansas and one stroke ahead of No. 50 Auburn.
