Gym Devils Fall After Holding Lead in First Two Rotations

In the final home meet of the season, the Arizona State women's gymnastics team fought to keep ahead of the Central Michigan Chippewas. The Gym Devils held the lead for the first two rotations of the competition but struggled on beam causing them to fall to the Chippewas 194.825-195.575. The Gym Devils are now 2-6 for the season and 2-4 in the PAC-10.
Atkinson led the Gym Devils on vault nailing her landing to score a 9.875. Nickie Johnson hit to tally a career-high of 9.850. Callie Price stuck to post a 9.825. Carly McMahon nailed her vault scoring a 9.725. Senior Kaitlynn Bormann posted a 9.7. Amelia Rew stumbled on her landing scoring a 9.500. The Gym Devils compiled a team score of 48.975 taking the lead over the Chippewas' bar total of 48.525.
On bars, Bormann performed a crowd-pleasing routine scoring a career-high of 9.900. Kahoku Palafox scored a 9.850 after sticking a perfect landing. Nickie Johnson hit a clean routine posting a 9.800. Francesca Mercurio did not hit all handstands in the routine but nailed her landing to score a 9.725. Atkinson hit a 9.700 after releasing slightly early on her dismount, leading to a large step on her landing. Stephanie Hangartner hit her feet on the floor after her ginger tallying a 9.375. The Gym Devils tallied a team score of 48.975.
The Gym Devils held the lead going into the third rotation 97.950 to the Chippewas' 97.625. The beam turned to out to be a struggle for the Gym Devils who tallied several falls. Palafox performed a beautiful series hitting a career-high of 9.850. Mercurio had a big wobble after her wolf jump full connected to her switch leap. She scored a 9.750. Atkinson took a large step forward on her landing scoring a 9.725. Bormann, performing her final routine at home, fell on her series scoring a 9.175. Madison Snowden, in her first official beam performance; fell on her series tallying a 9.125. Kelly Reilly fell on her series and her dismount posting a 8.700.
Losing the lead going into the fourth rotation, the Gym Devils performed solid floor performances. Snowden and Johnson led the Gym Devils nailing their routines. They both posted career-high scores of 9.9. Atkinson faltered on the landing of her last past scoring a 9.850. Hangartner nailed her last pass tallying a 9.825. Mercurio hit her routine posting a season-high of 9.775. Brittany Schuett took a few extra steps on her last past of a double pike scoring a 9.750.
The Gym Devils hit the road next week to compete against the BYU Cougars.
