BERKELEY - The fifth-ranked California women's tennis team (9-2) earned a 7-0 sweep of San Diego State (5-5) on Friday (March 5) at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Sophomore Stephany Chang provided the clinching point from court six as she defeated Olivia Colman, 6-2, 6-2.
Cal continued to impress in the doubles department as it claimed its 11th doubles point in as many matches. The Bears' freshman team of Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson provided the spark to set Cal off as they defeated Alicia Aguilar and Emma Cioffi, 8-2, at court three. At the top court, the No. 13-ranked team of junior Mari Andersson and sophomore Jana Juricova sealed the first point with an 8-2 win over Roxanne and Sierra Ellison. The Bears completed the sweep with an 8-4 win at court three as the No. 38-ranked duo of junior Marina Cossou and senior Kasia Siwosz took out Julia Trunk and Julia Wais, 8-4.
No. 56-ranked Andersson put the Bears in front, 2-0, as she took out Sierra Ellison, 6-2, 6-2, on the third singles court. No. 17 Cossou finished shortly thereafter with a 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 71 Aguilar at No. 2 singles. Chang tacked up the fourth point of the day with her win over Colman to give the Bears their ninth dual-match victory of the year.
With the match decided, Davis fought off a charge by Roxanne Ellison to come up with a 6-0, 7-6 win at court five. Davis claimed victory with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker. Siwosz also took a 7-4 tiebreaker win, but hers was in the first set. Siwosz then came up with a 7-5 win in the second set to take care of Wais for Cal's sixth point of the day. No. 2-ranked Juricova came off the courts last to give Cal a 7-0 win as she defeated No. 65 Trunk at the top court, 6-3, 7-5.
The Bears turn their attention to rival Stanford next as the No. 14-ranked Cardinal (8-1) comes to Berkeley for the first of two scheduled duals this season. The teams take the courts for the Big Slam at noon PT on Saturday, March 6. Please visit CalBears.com for links to live streaming video.
