Cal Competes in Stanford Outdoor Opener

STANFORD, Calif. - California got its outdoor track & field season underway with a busy day of events at the non-scoring Stanford Open Saturday. Alima Kamara won both the 200 and 400 meters, and Golden Bears established 10 outdoor personal bests.
Kamara, a freshman from Stockton, claimed the 200 race in 24.24 and she circled the track in the 400 in 54.14 to lead a 1-2-4 Cal finish. Hayley Huxtable was second in 56.89 and Kayla Dixon fourth in 57.98.
Other winners on the day included Steve Sodaro, who captured the 1500 meters in a PR 3:46.96, Connor Landry in the pole vault (17-0.75) and Brian Carmichael with a PR 6-10.75 in the high jump. For the women, Cherrelle Garrett placed first in the 100 meters in 12.07, Natalya Beneby won the 400 hurdles in 1:02.19, and Theresa Raub's 12.9-50 was the best clearance of the day in the pole vault.
Three of Cal's decathletes - Kevin Kuechler, Kyle Mills-Bunje and Mike Morrison - got in some outdoor work after an active indoor season, as well. Kuecher set PRs in the shot put (38-11.75) and 110 hurdles (15.60). Mills-Bunje was third in the javelin with a PR 178-10 and also set a PR in the shot with a best of 43-9.75. Finally, Morrison, the MPSF indoor champion in the heptathlon, high jumped 6-0.75 and threw the shot 41-5.00.
Cal will send selected athletes to the NCAA indoor championships next weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. Check CalBears.com for a complete list of Golden Bear qualifiers once they are announced. The outdoor season continues with the Cal Multis March 24-25 at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley.

High Jump - 5. Kirstin Rimbach 5-3.00 (1.60m).
Shot Put - 2. Linda Oseso 43-1.75 (13.15m).
Discus - 2. Kendall Morris 148-4 (45.21m)
