Cougar Tennis Upsets No. 39 Arizona, 6-1

March 6, 2010

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University tennis team put together an impressive showing in the singles matches to win over No. 39 nationally-ranked University of Arizona, 6-1, Saturday at the Outdoor Tennis Courts.

'I'm really proud of the team's fight,' said head coach Lisa Hart. 'We were down the doubles point and had lost four first sets in the singles but the team didn't give up. They showed a lot of heart and determination to come back and win. I am extremely proud of our players and I'm really excited to see what we can do the rest of the season.'

WSU started the day down a point after the doubles matches. The Cougs avoided a sweep of the doubles with a win from the duo of Andjela Kankaras and Liudmila Vasilieva over Claire Riesch and Natalia Toporowska, 7-6.

In singles, Elisabeth Fournier rebounded from a loss against Arizona State with a win over No. 106 Sarah Landsman, 6-2, 6-2. The win is Fournier's twelfth this spring at the No. 2 spot.

The rest of the singles matches went to three sets, with four players losing their first set. The Cougars battled back though and ultimately swept the singles matches.

WSU took the lead with a win at the No. 6 spot, as Jessica Gomez beat Arizona's Debora Castany, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Vasilieva pushed the Cougars lead to 3-1 when she beat No. 89 Natasha Marks, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.

Ksenia Googe's win over Alex Naydenova confirmed the victory for the Cougs. Kankaras and Marina Nicolas added the last two singles victories for the Cougar sweep.

The 39th nationally-ranked Arizona Wildcats are the highest-ranked opponents WSU has defeated since beating 34th-ranked Washington April 19, 2008 to close out the 2008 season and propel the Cougars into the 2008 NCAA tournament.

The Cougars (8-5, 1-1 Pac-10) hit the road for their next two matches travelling to Southern California. WSU will play Cal-State Northridge on March 16 and the University of San Diego on March 17.
