March 6, 2010
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Bruins scored five of their six runs with two outs, including two-run hits by senior Kaila Shull and sophomore Samantha Camuso, as UCLA defeated UTEP 6-0 on Saturday at the San Diego Classic.
The Bruins (16-4) play again on Saturday night at 7 p.m. against Long Beach State at the SDSU Softball Stadium.
Camuso and sophomore Andrea Harrison each had two hits, as the Bruins had eight as a team. Sophomore Aleah Macon (5-1) picked up the victory in the circle, tossing a five-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks.
The Bruins scored a pair of runs on a clutch hit with two outs in the bottom of the second. Andrea Harrison walked and Camuso singled through the left side to open the inning and both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Dani Yudin. One out later, Shull singled up the middle to drive home both runs and give the Bruins a 2-0 lead.
UCLA got two more two-out hits that produced three runs in the third. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, junior GiOnna DiSalvatore and Andrea Harrison had back-to-back singles and both runners came home on a double to right-center by Camuso to make it 4-0. Yudin followed with a single to left-center to plate sophomore pinch-runner Marti Reed to put the Bruins on top 5-0.
In the top of the fifth, Andrea Harrison made a catch worthy of SportsCenter to rob the Miners (15-6) of a two-run homer. Camilla Carrera drew a two-out walk and Stacie Townsend lifted a high fly ball to left, but Harrison stretched over the six-foot wall and made the catch to end the inning.
After robbing a pair of runs in the top of the inning, Andrea Harrison drove in one in the bottom half. Junior Monica Harrison led off with an infield single, moved to second on a grounder by DiSalvatore and scored on a double to center by her younger sister to make it 6-0.
