March 7, 2010

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sophomore ace Andrew Kittredge struck out 10 over seven and two-thirds innings for the win as the Washington baseball team came back from an early deficit to beat Long Beach State, 6-4, Sunday at Blair Field.

The win gave the Huskies (6-5) a series victory after they and Long Beach State (4-6) had split the first two games.

Kittredge (2-1), who also had a save in Friday night's 11-9 Husky win, gave up two runs in the first before settling in. He allowed six hits, didn't walk a batter and only one of his four runs allowed was earned.

UW freshman Adam Cimber pitched the ninth inning for his third save of the year.

Long Beach State got things started with a two-out rally in the first. Devin Lohman doubled and then scored on a triple from Steve Tinoco, who came in to score on a passed ball, giving the Dirtbags a 2-0 lead after one inning.

In the top of the second, with two outs and none on, Husky center field Caleb Brown blasted a solo homer out of spacious Blair Field, his second of the year, to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the third, the Huskies tied the game when senior Bradley Boyer hit a two-out, full-count pitch up the middle to score Miles Kizer from third base.

Washington scored three in the fifth inning to take the lead for the first time. An RBI single from left fielder Julien Pollard broke the 2-2 tie before first baseman Troy Scott belted a double to drive in two more with two outs, giving the Huskies a 5-2 advantage.

In the sixth, a two-out RBI single from UW shortstop David Bentrott tacked on another run to make it 6-2.

In the eighth, Long Beach State closed the gap with a two-out rally of its own. With two outs and none on, Tinoco reached on an error. After a double from Matt Duffy, T.J. Mittelstaedt doubled off the wall in right to bring home both runners, making it a 6-4 Husky lead.

LBSU starter Brandon Pinder (0-3) was charged with six runs over five innings in the loss.

Kizer and Boyer each had two hits and Scott drove in two runs to pace the Husky offense.

Next up for the Huskies is a three-game series this Thursday through Saturday at Brigham Young. After that, they return home to face Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series March 19-21.
