March 7, 2010

LOS ANGELES - Justin Howard went 5-for-6 with two doubles and five RBI as the New Mexico Lobos beat the USC Trojans, 16-7, to split a doubleheader Sunday and win the non-conference series at Dedeaux Field. Adam Courcha fell a home run short of the cycle in a 3-for-5 day while Max Willett also went 3-for-5 as the Lobos (8-4) pounded out 20 hits on the afternoon.

USC (5-6) earned a 6-2 decision in game one of today's doubleheader.

Keith Castillo led USC with a 3-for-5 performance, including a solo home run to center.

Neither starter lasted past the first inning. New Mexico recorded four runs and seven hits off Trojan starter Kevin Couture, but USC answered with six runs and seven hits off Lobo starter Mike Lachapelle.

After the Lobos tied it with two in the second, they took the lead for good in the third with five runs. Alex Allbritton scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Jordan Hershiser (0-1) and Howard later hit a two-run single off Brett Williams. Howard came up again with a two-run double in the fourth as New Mexico salted the game away with another four-run inning.

Matt Foat hit his second homer of the season with a three-run shot to left in the first for the Trojans. USC sophomore right-hander Brandon Garcia allowed just one hit and one run in three innings of relief with a walk and three strikeouts.

Notes: The first inning of today's doubleheader lasted 47 minutes...USC is now 10-12 in doubleheaders dating back to the 2000 season...freshman Jawanza Starling collected his first collegiate hit with a single to right in the eighth inning.
