Noyes Claims Block Record in Cougar Loss

March 7, 2010

April Cook and Katie Madison each tied for the game high with 13 points, but the Washington State women's basketball team let a halftime lead slip away in a 50-45 loss to Oregon State in the team's regular-season finale Sunday at Friel Court in Pullman, Wash. Madison also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds, recording her second double-double of the season.

Freshman center Carly Noyes recorded two blocks against the Beavers, becoming WSU's all-time single season record holder with 56. The Moses Lake, Wash., native passed Holly Zapel (55), who had held the record since 1984-85.

WSU dropped to 8-21 on the season and 3-15 in the Pacific-10 Conference, and the Beavers improved to 10-19 overall and 2-16 in conference play.

'It was a defensive battle,' WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. 'We just need to make sure when we get into these kinds of games that we take better care of the basketball.'

WSU outscored Oregon State 8-1 to begin the game, holding the Beavers without a field goal for the first seven-plus minutes. The Cougars built as much as a 10-point lead (18-8), but the Beavers were able to close the gap. OSU scored six-straight to cut its deficit to four (18-14), but WSU pushed its lead back out to seven (22-15).

The Cougars held Oregon State to 16.7-percent shooting in the opening period (5-of-30), the second-straight half a WSU opponent has shot less than 20 percent. Although the Cougars didn't fare much better from the floor - shooting just 26.9 percent (7-of-26) - they entered intermission with a 24-19 advantage.

Oregon State put together a 14-2 run to begin the second stanza, claiming its first lead of the game at 29-26 with 16-minutes, 45-seconds remaining. OSU pushed the advantage to nine (41-32) with 8:31 remaining, but the Cougars scored six-straight to cut the deficit to three (41-38). The Beavers extended their lead back to seven with 4:02 left in the game and held on for the victory.

With the 13 points, Cook now has 401 on the season, becoming the first Cougar to score 400 points in back-to-back seasons since Jenni Ruff accomplished the feat during the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons.

Freshman guard KiKi Moore tied her own freshman single-game record with eight steals against the Beavers.

The Cougars (No. 9) will square off against Arizona (No. 8) in the first round of the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Tournament Thursday (March 11) at 6 p.m. The tournament is being held at Galen Center in Los Angeles.
