Ashley Corral Named Pac-10 Player of the Week
March 8, 2010
Ashley Corral became the first Trojan to be named Pac-10 Player of the Week, earning the first such selection of the sophomore's career after she helped lift USC to a five-game win streak and the No. 3 seed in the coming Pac-10 Tournament with her strong play through the weekend. Corral set the new record for single-season 3-pointers made by a Trojan when she hit two threes during USC's tight win over Arizona on Thursday, then had a game-high 20 points USC's win over Arizona State in the regular-season finale.
Corral's effort from behind the arc pushed her past the previous 3-point single-season record of 72, and then added to her total (now 77) with four more in a crucial win over Arizona State. And with nine more assists in the winning Pac-10 weekend, Corral stands at No. 8 all-time at USC in single-season assists with 145 to date.
Corral also hit important free throws for the Trojans in the final minute during both wins. Up by one with 20 seconds to go, USC saw Corral go to the line to get the Trojans ahead of the Wildcats for a 55-53 final victory - USC's fourth straight win by five or fewer points. Against ASU, Corral had a game-high 20 points, including a 6-for-6 effort from the free-throw line in the final 1:02 of the game. The Sun Devils closed to within four points with 1:22 to go before Corral calmly added to the Trojans' lead to claim USC's fifth straight win.
USC enters this week's Pac-10 Tournament at the Galen Center with its best Pac-10 record (12-6) since 2004 -05 while also netting the Trojans' first season with more than 17 wins (currently 18-11) since 2005-06. The 62-52 win over ASU also was USC's largest margin of victory over the Sun Devils since 2004-05.
No. 3 seed USC will face No. 6 seed Oregon in a 5 p.m. quarterfinal game on Friday (March 12) at the Galen Center.
