UW In First As Darkness Halts Lexus Classic
March 8, 2010
FRESNO, Calif. - After a slow start in the first round of the Fresno Lexus Classic at San Joaquin Country Club, the Washington Husky men's golf team picked things up on the back nine and carried that over to the second round. Washington shot a +4 overall and leads the tournament by one stroke over Pepperdine.
The first two rounds were supposed to be completed on Monday but darkness forced the teams off the course prematurely. Washington shot an 8-over-par 363 in the first round, but was a collective 4-under in the second round before the sun set.
'We were solid, but not great,' was Husky coach Matt Thurmond's evaluation of his team's first day. 'We had an extremely slow start, but the wind picked up and the course became really difficult. We kept our patience and rode out the tough holes and got on a birdie roll.'
Pepperdine led Washington by eight strokes after the first round, but Washington slowly chipped away at their lead on the second 18. The Huskies had four golfers - Richard Lee, Chris Williams, Darren Wallace and Jens Bracht - at 1-under when play was halted. Chris Killmer was even and Nick Taylor was +3.
Lee is second on the leaderboard after shooting 4-under par through 35 holes. He shot a first round 3-under 68. Lee carded eight birdies and four bogeys during his two rounds.
Williams is tied for 13th at 1-over and has three holes remaining to play to complete his second round. He shot a 2-over 73 in the first round.
Taylor is next on the leaderboard tied for 20th at +2. He shot a first round 1-under 70 but struggled on his second 18 with five bogeys that were countered by just two birdies.
Killmer is tied for 31st at +4, while Wallace and Bracht are tied for 42nd, each shooting a 5-over before darkness set in.
Bracht was 11-over par after his first 26 holes with nine bogeys, a double bogey and zero birdies before an eagle on No. 12 set off an amazing streak of five birdies on his next six holes.
Pepperdine's Andrew Putnam, a native of Tacoma, leads the tournament at 5-under through 33 holes.
