Dawgs Set Out For Three Games At BYU
March 9, 2010
THIS WEEKEND: The Washington baseball team (6-5) wraps up a stretch of eight consecutive road games with a three-game series this Thursday through Saturday at BYU (4-7). Last week, the Huskies split a pair of non-league games at Oregon and then won two of three at Long Beach State, with all three being decided by two runs. This week at BYU, game times are 3:00 p.m. MST/2:00 p.m. PST Thursday and Friday and 1:00 p.m. MST/12:00 p.m. PST on Saturday. Fans can catch live stats coverage via gametracker and also watch to BYU's video broadcasts of all three games. The simplest way to find those links are to go to the front page of gohuskies.com and click on the 'Calendar' tab, or go to the UW baseball schedule page and click on that day's game. The Huskies will send out the following pitching rotation: sophomore RHP Aaron West on Thursday, junior LHP Ben Guidos on Friday and sophomore RHP Andrew Kittredge on Saturday. Next week, the Dawgs return home to face Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series March 19-21 before four more road games in a row: one at Seattle U. and three at Dallas Baptist. Here's a look at this week's action:

COACH MEGGS: Lindsay Meggs was named the Huskies' new head coach in July of 2009, just the third different UW head coach in 34 years. Meggs came to the UW after having spent the last three seasons at Indiana State and the 13 prior to that at Chico State, where he won NCAA Division II national championships in 1997 and 1999. He helped Chico to the D-II College World Series seven times and won the league eight times. At Indiana State, he was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Sycamores to a second-place finish, their highest since 1998. Meggs currently boasts a 621-312-4 record over 16-plus seasons as a four-year college head coach. He'd previously served as head coach at Long Beach City College and Oxnard College. Born in San Jose and a graduate of Saratoga (Calif.) High, Meggs played four seasons as the starting third baseman at UCLA. He was drafted by the Brewers in 1983, and then again by the Royals after his senior year in 1984. Meggs is joined by assistant coaches Dave Nakama, Greg Moore and Kevin Ticen.
SERIES HISTORY: BYU holds a 16-10-1 all-time record head-to-head against Washington. Most recently, in 2008, the UW won two of three vs. the Cougars in a three-game series in Seattle. In the first game, Nick Haughian struck out 14 Cougars in eight innings and the UW scored all five of its runs in the eighth in a 5-1 win. The next day, Kyle Conley belted two homers in a 12-4 Husky win. In the last of the three, BYU scored eight runs over the final two innings in an 11-7 win. In 2007, BYU won a pair of games against the Huskies in a midweek series in Provo. The Cougars won, 8-3 and 15-9. In 2006 in a three-game series in Seattle, Washington won two out of three, winning games one (10-1) and three (12-1) and dropping the middle game (4-2). In 2002, BYU also came to Husky Ballpark and managed a true 'split' of a three-game series as both teams had a win, a loss and a tie, as the final game ended 12-12 due to a travel curfew. The UW and BYU have also met in a number of neutral site tournament, including at Tucson in 2001, in St. George, Utah in 1999, and in the Kingdome in 1994, and in both San Bernardino and Palm Springs in 1993, among others.
HUSKIES BACK AT SAFECO FIELD: Washington will return to Safeco Field for the fourth consecutive season this year when the Huskies host Stanford in a 6:30 p.m. game on Saturday, May 1. Earlier that day, at 12:10 p.m., the Mariners play host to the Texas Rangers at Safeco. Fans who show a ticket stub from the M's game can redeem it for a discounted $5 ticket to the Husky game. Last season, the Huskies played two games at Safeco. A crowd of 3,675 saw a 3-1 Oregon State win and there were 4,296 on hand for a 6-4 Arizona State victory later in the year. Three seasons ago, the Huskies beat No. 8 OSU, 6-2, in their first-ever game at Safeco. Attendance was 10,421, at the time a league record for a conference game. In 2008, the Huskies edged Arizona, 1-0, on a two-hit, 15-strikeout shutout by Nick Haughian as 5,187 fans watched on. Tickets are $8 and UW students are admitted free.
