Trojans Record 5-0 Shutout At Pepperdine

March 9, 2010

MALIBU, Calif. - Kevin Couture threw seven shutout innings while Cade Kreuter was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI Tuesday as the USC Trojans shut out the Pepperdine Waves, 5-0. Couture and reliever Shuhei Fujiya clamped down a Pepperdine offense that did not get a runner past second base.

USC improved to 6-6 overall while Pepperdine fell to 4-8.

Couture allowed five hits, striking out six with one walk. Aaron Gates (1-2) took the loss for the Waves after allowing five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Matt Foat led off the Trojan second with a double to right center, later advancing to third on a Gates wild pitch. Kreuter then singled Foat home with a hit up the middle. With Adam Landecker at second in the third inning, Ricky Oropesa singled to right. Pepperdine catcher Nate Johnson was unable to handle the throw from right as Landecker scored for a 2-0 USC lead.

In the top of the sixth, Matt Hart and Keith Castillo had back-to-back singles before Kreuter launched Gates' 3-1 pitch over the fence in center for the commanding 5-0 advantage.

USC hosts Connecticut in a 5 p.m. game tomorrow at Dedeaux Field before a four-game series at Hawai'i, beginning on Friday (March 12) at 6:30 p.m. HT. All five games will be broadcast on with a video webcast for the Connecticut game.

Notes: USC recorded its first shutout since a similar 5-0 win on May 5, 2009, at home against Cal Poly...the Trojans are 4-1 in road games this season.
