UA's Marquez Invited to WPS Preseason Camp

March 9, 2010

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona women's soccer player Analisa Marquez will participate with the Boston Breakers of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) in a preseason camp and will compete for a roster spot beginning Feb. 28 in Boston.

Marquez, who completed her senior season at Arizona last fall, recently advanced out of open tryouts for the Breakers and was invited to participate in the team's preseason camp. She was in Boston February 28 - March 6.

'I'm looking forward to gaining more experience with a professional team,' Marquez said before departing. 'It's something that has definitely been a goal of mine the last couple years.'

The Breakers announced on March 5 that Marquez was one of 30 players on the training camp roster.

A graduate of Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Ariz., Marquez will be competing in the coming weeks for one of 18 roster spots, with four developmental spots also available. The preseason camp will also include all players who have been signed or drafted by the organization, except for those who are on the women's national team.

A key contributor in her four seasons at Arizona, Marquez started 40 of the 68 games she played in as a Wildcat. She netted five career goals and tallied on assist, despite playing the majority of her final two seasons as a central defender.

Wildcat head coach Lisa Oyen, who coached Marquez during all four seasons of her career and also one year with the Arizona Olympic development program, feels that Marquez has worked hard and earned this opportunity with Boston.

'We are excited for this great opportunity for Analisa,' Oyen said. 'She is very deserving as she had a fantastic senior season. She has proven she can compete with the top players in the country.

'Analisa is a very dedicated student-athlete,' Oyen added. 'Her success is due to the hard work she committed to over the past four years. She is a wonderful representative for our soccer program and Wildcat athletics.'

Should Marquez not be selected to the club, she has already been invited to play with an affiliate in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL).

The WPS is the highest level women's professional soccer league in North America. Formed in September 2007 as the result of the efforts of the Women's Soccer Initiative, Inc., WPS, began play on March 29, 2009 and consists of eight teams across the country.

The teams for the 2010 season are the Atlanta Beat, Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars, FC Gold Pride (Bay Area), Philadelphia Independence, Sky Blue FC (NJ / NY), Saint Louis Athletica and Washington Freedom. WPS continues to explore additional potential franchises for 2011 and beyond.

Franchises are individually owned and operated by a group of investors in each market. In addition, two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash and former Yahoo! President and COO Jeff Mallett are investors and part owners in the league.
