Dawgs Drop Series Opener At BYU, 6-4

PROVO, Utah - The Washington baseball team got two hits each from Bradley Boyer and Sean Meehan and a pair of runs batted in from Jacob Lamb, but Brigham Young scored in each of the first six innings to beat the Huskies, 10-4, in the Cougars' 2010 home opener at Larry H. Miller Field.
UW sophomore starter Aaron West (0-1) suffered the loss. In an inning and two-thirds, he gave up three runs on four hits.
BYU starter Justin Shutt (1-2) worked five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, to pick up the victory. Chris Capper worked the final four innings to pick up a save.
The Cougars (5-7) got a two-run homer from Alex Wolfe in the first to take a 2-0 lead. In the second, BYU added a run when Jonathan Cluff scored from third on a wild pitch.
Washington (6-6) cut the lead to 3-2 with two two-out runs in the third as Lamb, the Huskies' freshman third baseman, singled through the right side to drive in a pair.
In the third, BYU added a fourth run on a sacrifice fly from Dane Nielsen and, in the fourth, the Cougars got a run on a passed ball and another on an RBI single from catcher Bryce Ayoso, increasing their lead to 6-2.
An RBI single from Stephen Wells in the fifth increased BYU's lead to 7-4 and a two-out solo homer from Ayoso in the sixth made it 8-4. Cougars designated hitter Ryan Bernal hit a two-run homer in the eighth to cap the scoring for BYU.
The three-game series continues with a 2:00 p.m. PST game Friday and wraps up Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. PST contest.
