Lastrapes Hits Three Homers in Win
March 11, 2010
TUCSON -- Three long balls by Brittany Lastrapes punctuated No. 2-ranked Arizona's 13-0 five-inning victory over St. John's in a mercy-rule game at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The junior tied the UA record for home runs in a game, a mark that has been achieved a number of times in Arizona's long and prestigious history.
St. John's got base runners from the onset, with Chelsea Durning and Amber Curry singling to the left side to open the first off UA ace Kenzie Fowler. But Fowler got two infield popups and a fly ball to end the rally.
Lastrapes led off the Arizona first with her fifth home run of the year to give the Cats a quick lead. UA added another run, unearned, after a pair of walks off Linzee Sumrall and a fielding error in the bottom of the second to make it 2-0.
A walk by Durning and a hit by Kacee Cox put two aboard with two outs for STJ in the third but Fowler got out a lineout to third and an infield grounder to get out of the jam.
The Cats blew the game open with six unearned runs in the bottom of the frame, helped by two dropped popups.
K'Lee Arredondo singled and, with one out, pitcher Sumrall dropped a foul pop near the third base line by Brigette Del Ponte, who then singled. Sumrall got Baillie Kirker to fly out and then Matte Haack hit a high pop up in the infield that third baseman Julie Sanchez dropped to let Arredondo score.
Stacie Chambers slammed her fifth home run of the year to lead off the UA fourth, but it was just the start. Del Ponte walked and Kirker singled to left, then after a fly out, Arriola walked to load the bases. Sumrall struck out Buchanan, but Lastrapes bombed a grand slam to left for seventh RBI in the game and the final score.
Fowler (12-0) limited the Red Storm to four hits, striking out four an walking one. Sumrall (3-5) took the loss.
Arizona improved to 16-1 and dropped St. John's to 6-8.
Both team will play pairs of games tomorrow in the Wildcat Invitational tournament, a slate of 15 games over the next three days.
