Errors Aid Hawai'i In 8-2 Win Over USC

March 13, 2010

HONOLULU - Alex Capaul threw 5 1/3 solid innings in relief Friday as the Hawai'i Rainbows defeated the USC Trojans, 8-2, in the first game of a four-game non-conference series. The Rainbows took advantage of three errors by the Trojans in the seventh, including two by starter Andrew Triggs, to score four runs after being down 2-0.

Capaul entered the game in the second for Hawai'i (7-6) after starter Nate Klein, who pitched at USC in 2007 before transferring, left with an undisclosed injury.

Kevin Roundtree went 3-for-3 for the Trojans (6-8) and threw out two baserunners as the Trojans' catcher.

Roundtree brought home Matt Hart in the second for the 1-0 lead. Taylor Wrenn made it a 2-0 lead in the fifth with an RBI single, plating Roundtree from third. Triggs threw six shutout innings, allowing only three hits, until he got into trouble in the seventh.

Greg Garcia singled to lead off the UH seventh. Kolten Wong hit a ground ball to third that handcuffed Hart for the first error. David Freitas then bunted off the third base side, but Triggs' throw pulled Joe De Pinto off the bag at first to load the bases with no outs. On back-to-back full-count pitches, Triggs walked Collin Bennett and Kevin MacDonald to tie the game at 2-2. After he struck out Jeffrey Van Doornum, Christian Johnson hit a chopper back to the mount that Triggs threw over the head of Roundtree as two more runs scored for the Rainbows. UH added four more runs in the eighth to put the game away with Bennent hitting a two-run double to finish with three RBI on the night.

The series continues tomorrow with a 6:35 p.m. start (Honolulu time) and will be broadcast on
