Cats Sweep in San Diego

SAN DIEGO – The University of Arizona men’s tennis team picked up their second win of the weekend in San Diego, defeating the San Diego State Aztecs 5-2 at the SDSU Tennis Center. The Wildcats lost the doubles point, but bounced back to win five of their six singles matches.
“The guys did a nice job taking care of business today,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “Hopefully we can keep things rolling as we head to the Blue/Gray Classic.”
In doubles competition, the Wildcats fell to the Aztecs in all three matches. On court two, Achim Ceban and Giovanni Vaglietti defeated No. 51 Geoff Embry and Ravid Hazi 8-5. Moments later, Juan Gomez and Luis Rattenhuber secured the doubles point on court one after they topped junior Borja Malo and senior Pat Metham 8-5. San Diego State’s Andre Feliz and Tim Schulz van Endert also won on court three by defeating Andres Arango and Andres Carrasco in a close match, 7-6 (1).
After dropping the doubles point, the Wildcats never gave up and fought back in singles competition.
On court three, Zafiros topped Rattenhuber 6-2, 6-2 to tie the Wildcats and Aztecs at 1-1. Embry followed up with a win on court four by defeating Vaglietti 6-1, 6-2. San Diego State earned their second point of the day on court five after Feliz won 6-3, 6-2 against Malo. But after that it was all Wildcats as they picked up wins in the next three matches. On court one, Arango won his first set 6-4, and then battled in the second set winning a close 7-6 set against Gomez. Carrasco also battled in his match against Ceban, but the junior from Barcelona, Spain clinched the match and the win for the Wildcats in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Hazi earned Arizona their fifth point, after dropping his first set 5-7 against Schulz van Endert, the senior rebounded in his next two sets winning 6-2, 6-1.
Arizona improves to 9-4, while the Aztecs drop to 2-7.
The Wildcats will next be in action at the prestigious Blue/Gray Classic on March 18-21. Match times will be announced on Wednesday.
