March 16, 2010
HONOLULU - Sophomore Chad Smith threw six shutout innings while striking out eight batters Monday as the USC Trojans shut out the Hawai'i Rainbows, 9-0, in the final game of a four-game series. The Trojans recorded 14 hits to take the series, three games to one, with USC outscoring UH by a 21-2 margin in the last two games.
UH (7-9) put runners at third in the first and second innings, as well as runners at first and second with one out in the third, but could not cash in any runs off Smith, who allowed only two hits.
The Trojans scored first when Oropesa hit his fourth homer, lifting a two-run shot down the left field line. USC made it a 7-0 lead with four in the fifth, capped by Hart's two-run single to center.
USC travels to Pacific for a non-conference series next weekend, beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Saturday's game starts at 6:30 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday with all three games being broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
