Dawgs Fall To Fullerton, 9-7

March 19, 2010

SEATTLE - Cal State Fullerton shortstop Christian Colon hit three home runs, one to each field, to lead the Titans to a 9-7 win over the Washington baseball team Friday night at Husky Ballpark.

Washington freshman Jacob Lamb went 3-for-4 with a home run to lead the Huskies, who fell to 7-8 on the year.

Fullerton starter Noe Ramirez (3-1), who settled down after allowing four early runs, pitched eight innings to pick up the victory for the Titans (8-9), striking out seven.

Colon, a preseason first-team All-American, led off the game with his second homer of the year, a shot that narrowly cleared the right-field fence, to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.

Washington drew even in the second when right fielder Pierce Rankin singled and, having moved to second on a wild pitch, scored on a single from third baseman Aaron Russell. Later in the second, senior left fielder Bradley Boyer came through with a two-out, bases-loaded single to drive in two more, giving the UW a 3-1 lead.

In the third, Husky second baseman Doug Cherry's two-out double drove in Troy Scott to make it a 4-1 score.

Titan catcher Billy Marcoe hit a two-out solo homer in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-2.

In the fifth, Colon hit his second of the night, a long solo shot to left, to make it 4-3. Fullerton followed with three straight singles, the last of them from Nick Ramirez driving in two runs to put Fullerton back in front, 5-4.

Colon came through once more in the sixth, this time connecting on a two-out single to drive in a run. Another came in from third on an errant throw, making it a 7-4 Titan lead.

In the eighth, with a runner on and two outs, Colon hit his third of the night, this one to center field, to make it 9-4.

Lamb led off the bottom of the eighth with his second homer of the year.

In the ninth, RBI doubles from Caleb Brown and Pierce Rankin got the Huskies two more runs and brought the tying run to the plate, but Nick Ramirez moved from first base to the mound and got the final out to pick up his third save.

UW reliever Jacob Clem (0-2), who faced only two batters, took the loss.

The series continues Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. game and wraps up on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. start.
