March 19, 2010

BERKELEY - California women's tennis freshman Annie Goransson posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Sacramento State's Aileen Tsan at the fifth singles court to secure a 6-1 win for the Golden Bears (11-3) on Friday (March 19) at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Cal earned its second win over the Hornets (9-5, 1-0 Big Sky) this season to go with another 6-1 victory from Jan. 30 in the 2010 ITA Kick-Off Weekend event.

The Bears cruised through doubles and swept all three courts for the first point of the day. Cal's No. 6-ranked duo of junior Mari Andersson and sophomore Jana Juricova defeated Tatsiana Kapshai and Tsan, 8-2, at the top court to get the Bears off to a fast start. Goransson and sophomore Stephany Chang sealed the point with their 8-3 win against Maria Meliuk and Zalina Nazarova at the third court. Junior Marina Cossou and senior Kasia Siwosz then added an 8-3 win of their own over Clarisse Baca and Rebeca Delgado at court two.

No. 50-ranked Andersson was the first off the singles courts as she put a 6-3, 6-1 win in the books against Meliuk at the third court to give Cal a 2-0 advantage. Chang flipped her set scores and recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win over Nazarova on court six to put the Bears within a point of clinching the match. Goransson's victory came next at court five to give Cal its 11th dual win of the year.

At No. 2 singles, 16th-ranked Cossou finished off Delgado, 6-2, 6-3, to make the score, 5-0, for the Bears. The Hornets got on the board next with a win at court four as Baca defeated Siwosz in a third-set super-tiebreaker, 10-7. Baca edged Siwosz in the first set with a 7-5 score in the breaker but fell swiftly to a re-energized Siwosz, who won the second set, 6-0. No. 2-ranked Juricova earned her team-leading 27th singles win of the year at the top court as she defeated Kapshai in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, to make the final score, 6-1, for Cal.

The Bears will embark on a three-match road trip next week as they face Pepperdine in a 1:30 p.m. PT match in Malibu, Calif. on Tuesday (March 23) to kick things off. From Southern California, Cal will head to the desert to open Pac-10 play as it visits Arizona (March 26) and Arizona State (March 27). Please check for more information.
