March 20, 2010
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Oregon State swimming sophomore Anna Heller finished her bid at the 2010 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday morning with a career best time of 1:57.21 in the 200-yard backstroke event.
'It was really exciting and a little intimidating being at the NCAAs with some of the top teams in the country,' Heller said. 'It was my best time in the 200 backstroke which I am happy with but I feel like I can go faster. I feel happy with how I did in my first NCAA meet.'
Heller started off her first trip to the NCAA Championships with the 100 backstroke Friday morning. She swam a time of 53.56 during the prelims and just missed qualifying for the finals. During the Pac-10 Championships at the end of February, Heller set the school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.39.
'It was a nervous swim for her yesterday in the 100 backstroke,' Oregon State swimming head coach Larry Liebowitz said. 'It was her first competition at this level but it was a good swim for her.'
Heller finished her efforts at the NCAA Championships with the 200 backstroke when she set her lifetime best of 1:57.21 during the prelims and yet again just missed qualifying for the finals. Her time moves her into second all-time at Oregon State for the event.
Heller finishes her 2009-10 campaign at the NCAA Championships having set lifetime bests in seven different events including a school record in the 100 backstroke.
'Anna set a lifetime best in the 200 backstroke this morning was great to see,' Liebowitz said. 'I'm very proud of her. She did very well for her first time at this level of competition and she'll be back here in the years to come.'
