Softball Comes Up Short against No. 25 UMass

March 20, 2010

San Diego, Calif. – Despite striking first, the Oregon State softball team (10-13) came up short against No. 25 UMass Minutewomen (15-6) on Saturday evening at the San Diego State Softball Stadium in the Beavers’ second game of the San Diego Classic II.

Freshman Lea Cavestany (Pittsburg, Calif.) tallied two of the team’s three hits for her ninth multi-hit game of the season.

Junior Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) put the Beavers on the board in the top of the first with two outs on a double to right center to score Cavestany, who led off the inning with a blooper single over the second baseman’s head.

But UMass answered back in a big way in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on two hits to take a two-run lead before adding another pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 5-1. The Minutewomen tacked on one more in the bottom of the fifth.

Cavestany earned her second hit of the game, breaking up a 14-batter retired streak, in the top of the sixth with one out, following with a stolen base. But she was left stranded on second as the inning closed.

Sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) was the pitcher of record, throwing the complete game. Her record now is 7-11, fanning four. UMass Sara Plourde earned the win, improving to 14-4.
