Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season by Hosting Baldy Castillo Invite
March 21, 2010
TEMPE – The first outdoor action of the season got underway Saturday night at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe as Arizona State University fared well in its own Baldy Castillo Invitational. Nearly 400 athletes competed in the event that saw the Sun Devils win six total events on the day, including four women’s races and two men’s events.
On the track, the women won three sprint events, including two individual runs and one relay. Individually, Kayla Sanchez was victorious in the 100m dash, winning the event in 12.20, while rookie Keia Pinnick was the winner of the 200m dash in 23.44. The final sprint victory came in the 4x400m relay as the group of Jasmine Chaney, Pinnick, Dominique’ Maloy and Samantha Henderson combined to run 3:44.20.
The final women’s victory came from Kari Hardt in the 800m run as the junior blazed to a time of 2:08.47, just missing a tie for the 10th-best mark all-time in program history by 0.07.
For the men, Jeff Helmer captured the 3,000m run in 8:13.21 while Marc Peck took home the top mark in the javelin with his winning toss of 64.55m (211-9). Peck was just 10cm from equaling the 10th-best throw all-time at ASU.
Another outstanding performance came from rookie Anna Jelmini, who is competing unattached from the program this year. Jelmini easily won both the discus and the shot put with marks of 56.27m and 17.27m, respectively. Her shot put mark would be good enough to rank third on the school’s all-time list while her discus mark would stand as the fifth-best all-time.
The Sun Devils will remain at home next weekend as they play host to the 2010 ASU Invitational. The hammer throw will be held on Friday with all other events slated for Saturday.
