The Oregon State softball team (11-13) overcame an early three-run deficit to dominate the UIC Flames (6-16), 9-4, in the team’s first game of the San Diego Classic II on Sunday at the USD Softball Complex.

Freshman Ally Kutz (Mt. Vernon, Wash.) went a perfect 4-for-4, nearly batting the cycle with a pair of singles, a double and a triple. Sophomore Mary Claire Brenner (Portland, Ore.) added a perfect performance of her own, going 2-for-2 with two runs and a RBI with both hits being doubles. Oregon State racked up a season-high 16 hits.

The Flames got off to a hot start in the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits and one Oregon State error.

Oregon State cut the lead to two in the bottom of the second on sophomore Ashley Sanchez’s (Alameda, Calif.) single to score Brenner before taking the eventual lead in the bottom of the third with four runs, boosted by Kutz’s two-RBI triple. Kutz scored her lone run of the game on an error by first baseman Brooke Frydendall.

The Beavers tacked on three more in the bottom of the fourth on junior Audrey Roderfeld’s (Vista, Calif.) two-run homer over left field before Kutz picked up another RBI on her second extra base hit of the game, a double.

Senior Tarah Black (Portland, Ore.) earned the team’s final RBI in the bottom of the sixth to give the Beavers the final 9-4 lead on a single through the right side to score sophomore Nikki Chandler (Houston, Texas), who was running for Roderfeld, who singled to start the inning.

Sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) earned the complete game win, fanning nine, to improve to 8-11 on the season. The Flames’ Ashley Hewett was charged with the loss after throwing 2.1 innings, giving up seven runs, six of those earned.

The Beavers (12-13) tallied their second 16-hit game of the day to top the San Diego Toreros (9-16), 9-2, led by junior McKenna Lowe’s (Tustin, Calif.) 3-for-3 performance to wrap up day two of the San Diego Classic II for the Beavers at the USD Softball Complex.

Freshman Lea Cavestany (Pittsburg, Calif.) also racked up three hits, including a double, to go 3-for-5, and junior Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) posted her second home run of the day to score three.

The Beavers jumped on the board in the top of the second after loading the bases in the first on a pair of hits and a walk but leaving all three stranded. Sophomore Ashley Sanchez (Alameda, Calif.) started things off from the seven spot in the lineup with an infield single. Freshman Maggie Doremus (San Diego, Calif.) scored Sanchez on her second single of the season, dropping one into right center before scoring in the next at bat on Cavestany’s single to left field. Lowe got in on the action with a single that rolled through the right side between the first and second baseman to give the Beavers a 3-0 advantage after two.

San Diego put one on the board on a RBI double by Taylor Hensley, scoring Danielle Duhart, who led off the fourth with a four-pitch walk, narrowing the Beavers lead to 3-1. Another double by Hensley scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one run game.

But the Beavers tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth on back-to-back doubles by senior Tarah Black (Portland, Ore.), pinch hitting, followed by one Cavestany to start the inning. But it didn’t matter as Lowe walked before Roderfeld cleared the bases on a long ball over left field to give Oregon State the 7-2 lead.

Cavestany added another run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single to right field to score sophomore Nikki Chandler (Houston, Texas) from second. Senior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.) followed closely behind tallying a hit in the same spot to score Black from third to boost the Beavers to a seven run lead going into the bottom half of the inning.

Senior Kelly Dyer (Eugene, Ore.) earned the win after throwing five full innings with two strikeouts, improving to 4-2 on the season. The Toreros’ Jennifer Ellenbeck was charged with the loss, falling to 6-8. Sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) threw the remaining two scoreless innings for the Beavers with three strikeouts, catching a pair looking.
