Cougars in Fifth at Duck Invitational

March 22, 2010

JUNCTION CITY, Ore. - The Washington State Men's golf team is in fifth place after the first day of the Oregon Duck Invitational at the par-72, 7,020-yard Shadow Hills Country Club.

The Cougars were in eleventh after the first found but made a late run by posting the lowest round of the day (356, -4) to finish 12-over-par. The team sits six strokes behind No. 25 Oregon State (+12), which finished the day in third place. Everyone will be chasing No. 3 Oregon tomorrow, which finished the day at 5-under-par.

Senior Kevin Tucker led the Cougars during the opening day, posting team-low rounds during both the first and second round. His afternoon round of 69 (-3) tied for the lowest second-round score in the tournament field and was only bettered by Arkansas' Austin Cook who posted a 68 during the first round. Tucker paired his 69 with a first round 73 (+1) to finish at 2-under-par, good enough for a share of ninth and only two strokes out of the lead.

Nick Ellis and Hank Frame finished second and third for the Cougars at 145 (+1) and 146 (+2), respectively. Ellis will tee off Tuesday in a tie for 18th while Frame will start in a tie for 21st. A top-25 finish for Ellis would be the 19th of his career, putting him in a tie for sixth on WSU's all-time list.

This invitational calls for added depth because each team takes its top five scores, unlike most tournaments which only count the top four scores. Seniors Nick Grigsby and Austin Hurt stepped up into those four and five spots, firing a 148 (+4) and 151 (+7), respectively.

Play will resume tomorrow with the final 18 holes beginning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Check tomorrow for final results.
