Washington Wins One, Loses One In Match Play

MARANA, Ariz. -- The Husky men's golf team beat Middle Tennessee 3-2 in the consolation bracket of the Calloway Collegiate Match Play Championship after losing 3-2 to Texas Tech in an earlier match. Washington is 1-2 overall in the tournament - having lost twice 3-2 and won once 3-2.
The win over Middle Tennessee State came down to Chris Williams clinching the victory by sinking a five-foot putt on the final hole while already boasting a 1-up lead. The other four matches had already been decided - with Washington's Richard Lee and Chris Killmer each claiming wins and Middle Tennessee State golfers claiming matches over Nick Taylor and Charlie Hughes.
Killmer dominated his match winning 6 and 4 and Lee won with relative ease, 3 and 2. Taylor was beat, 4 and 3, in the No.1 match while Craig Smith beat Hughes 3 and 1.
In action earlier in the morning, Nick Taylor and Chris Williams were able to claim wins, but Richard Lee, Charlie Hughes and Chris Killmer each loss in tough fashion on the 18th hole. Taylor won 2 and 1, while Williams breezed to a 3 and 2 victory.
Williams arrived on the 18th tee box all square, but he bogeyed the hole while Tyler Weworski birdied. Lee and Hughes arrived on the 18th hole down one stroke and were each unable to make up any ground.
Washington and Arizona State will face off tomorrow in the consolation bracket.
