March 23, 2010

MALIBU, Calif. - The 10th-ranked California women's tennis team won its third match in a row as the Golden Bears (12-3) defeated No. 51 Pepperdine, 7-0, on Tuesday (March 23) at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. Even with No. 16-ranked junior Marina Cossou out of the lineup to nurse an illness, Cal crashed the Waves to drop Pepperdine to 6-10 on the year. Sophomore Stephany Chang had the clinching point as she completed a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Andrea Oates on the fifth singles court.

The Bears claimed the doubles point with wins on the top two courts. As the first team off, Cal's No. 6-ranked tandem of junior Mari Andersson and sophomore Jana Juricova put away Anamika Bhargava and Marie Zalameda at the top court, 8-5. Partnering for the first time since they advanced to the doubles round of 16 at the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship, freshman Tayler Davis and senior Kasia Siwosz sealed the first point of the day from court two as they defeated Arianna Colffer and Ali Walters, 8-5. With the point already decided, Chang and freshman Annie Goransson were edged at court three by Oates and Tania Rice, 8-7, and 7-4 in the tiebreaker.

Freshman Nelly Radeva made short work of Rice at the sixth singles court as she won, 6-1, 6-0, to give the Bears a 2-0 lead in the match. The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Goransson took out Zalameda, 6-3, 6-0, at the fourth court. Chang's head-to-head battle with Oates came to an end on court five next to clinch the match for Cal.

On the top singles court, No. 2-ranked Juricova held off No. 81-ranked Colffer, for a 6-1, 6-3 win, and a 5-0 lead in the match. No. 50 Andersson came off the courts next as she blanked Bhargava, 7-0, in the second-set tiebreaker after winning the first set, 6-2. Andersson's 20th singles victory of the year put Cal on top, 6-0, in the match. Siwosz finished off the 7-0 sweep for the Bears with her three-set win over Walters at court three. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Siwosz bounced back to take a 6-2 win in the second. She then triumphed with a 10-6 victory in the third-set super-tiebreaker.

Cal will head to the desert to open Pac-10 play this weekend as it visits No. 55 Arizona, in Tucson, Ariz. (March 26) and No. 23 Arizona State, in Tempe, Ariz. (March 27). Please check for more information.
