USC Beats Pepperdine, 3-2

LOS ANGELES - Joe De Pinto scored from second after pitcher Aaron Gates' throw on a pickoff attempt was wild for the eventual game-winning run Tuesday as the USC Trojans defeated the Pepperdine Waves, 3-2, in a non-conference game at Dedeaux Field.
De Pinto had reached on Gates' first error on a sacrifice attempt in the bottom of the fifth, colliding with Pepperdine second baseman Joe Sever as Adam Landecker scored from second.
Chris Mezger (2-0) picked up the win in relief with four innings, allowing two runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts. He took over for starter Chad Smith in the fifth as Smith threw four scoreless innings with two hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Shuhei Fujiya threw a perfect ninth, striking out Miles Silverstein, for his first save as a Trojan.
USC improved to 11-10 on the season while Pepperdine fell to 6-13.
The Trojans scored a run in the fourth when Matt Foat led off with an infield single. Alex Sherrod then hit a hard ground ball that Torrey Jacoby could not handle as the error put runners at first and second. Cade Kreuter then advanced both runners with a sacrifice before Matt Hart's groundout to third plated Foat.
With the 3-0 lead, the Waves came back with two runs in the eighth off Mezger on solo home runs by Brian Humphries and Jacoby. Mezger then got Nate Johnson to ground out to first to maintain the lead.
USC opens Pac-10 Conference play this weekend at No. 19 Stanford, Friday-Sunday (March 26-28). Friday's game starts at 5:30 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
