With the Husky men's basketball team set to take on West Virginia later today at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, and with the start of spring football just around the corner, UW fans can't help remembering the only other time that a Husky team played in the Carrier Dome.

The basketball team will be playing in the Dome for the first time ever in its Sweet 16 matchup with the Mountaineers (4:27 p.m. PT), but three years ago, the Husky football team made its 2007 season debut at Syracuse in a game that was memorable for several reasons.

Chief among those reasons was the successful debut of Husky quarterback Jake Locker, now a Heisman hopeful preparing for his senior year in 2010.

On August 31, 2007, Husky football fans were most interested in seeing Locker in action in the Purple and Gold for the first time. He didn't disappoint.

After surrendering an first-quarter field goal, the Huskies got rushing touchdowns from tailback Louis Rankin and Locker in the second quarter and rolled from there.

Up 14-6 at halftime, Rankin scored two more rushing TDs and Locker added another in the third quarter as Washington prevailed, 42-12.

Washington out-gained the Orange, 444 yards to 207. Locker was 14-for-19 for 142 yards and no interceptions through the air and also ran for 83 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Rankin rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns on only 17 carries.

It was one of the greatest quarterbacking debuts in Husky history, especially for a redshirt-freshman, as Locker was that night.

He was boosted by a good traveling group of Husky fans, including a large contingent from Whatcom county.

'I think there were about 70 people from my town of Ferndale,' Locker said afterwards, 'and about 150 from my home county.'

So, as an athletic department, the Huskies are 1-0 all-time in the Carrier Dome. Tonight, the Husky basketball team will do its best to add another victory to that total.
