Cal Swimmers Shine in During First Day of NCAA Prelims

The California 400 medley relay team of sophomore backstroker Mathias Gydesen, junior breaststroker Damir Dugonjic, freshman butterflyer Thomas Shields and junior freestyler Josh Daniels set the 400 medley relay record during the Friday prelims of NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championship in Columbus, Ohio with a time of 3:05.51. The Golden Bears, who are seeded first for Friday night's final, broke the previous record of 3:06.99 set by Grevers, Alexandrov, Bubolz and Barbic of Northwestern, set Feb. 16, 2007.
Other Friday prelim highlights for Cal during the first day of the NCAA championship in Columbus, Ohio, included the Bears' 200 free relay team (juniors Nathan Adrian, Graeme Moore, Josh Daniels and Guy Barnea) placing first with a time of 1:16.66. Individually, Adrian was second in the 50 free prelim with a time of 19.04 and Daniels sixth with a mark of 19.29. In the 200 IM, sophomore Martin Liivamagi was sixth with a time of 1:43.52.
'We're just excited to swim fast during the morning session and get off to a good start on the first day of this meet', said Cal coach Dave Durden, who's Bears will have three individual swims in the top eight for tonight's finals, supplemented by another three in the consolation finals. Both of the Bear relays (200 yard freestyle relay, 400 yard medley relay) qualified first for tonight's finals session.
The Bears began the day qualifying first in the 200 yard freestyle relay, smashing the pool record with a time of 1:16.66 (Adrian, 19.05; Moore, 19.05; Daniels, 19.16; Barnea, 19.40). The sprint squad will swim in lane four tonight, flanked by Texas, Stanford, Auburn, and Kentucky, who qualified second through fifth.
In the 200 IM, the Cal contingent was led by Liivamagi who qualified in the sixth position (1:43.52). Senior Sean Mahoney took 14th (1:44.64) and junior Martti Aljand took 16th (1:44.75). Both Mahoney and Aljand will swim in the consolation final for the Bears tonight.
The 50 free top eight will showcase a pair of Bear juniors in Adrian and Daniels. Adrian is the American record holder (18.71) and the defending NCAA champion in this event. Moore qualified in the 14th position (19.58).
In the record-setting 400 medley relay, the Cal squad of Gydesen (46.41), Dugonjic (51.80), Shields (44.92) and Daniels (42.38) earned the top spot in tonight's 400 medley relay final. Florida, Stanford, Texas, and Auburn round out the top five for the 400 medley relay.
Sophomore Isaac Howell (21st 500 free, 4:20.08), sophomore Nolan Koon (28th, 200 IM, 1:45.86), freshman Ben Hinshaw (37th, 200 IM, 1:46.14) and freshman Trevor Hoyt (40th, 200 IM) also competed for the Bears in Friday's prelims.
