California Hosts WNIT Quarterfinal Game on Saturday
March 26, 2010
The California Golden Bears (21-13, 11-7 Pac-10) are one of eight teams remaining in the 2010 Postseason Women's National Invitation Tournament. They will be back in Berkeley on Saturday, March 27 when they will host the BYU Cougars (23-9, 11-5 Mountain West) at 6:00 p.m. Live streaming audio of the game will be available on CalBears.com.
The winner of the game will advance to the semifinals to take on the winner of Sunday's Illinois/Illinois State game.
Cal has a perfect 2-0 record against BYU, but the two teams have not faced one another since the 1981-82 season.
The Bears advanced to the quarterfinals with a 71-57 victory over the Oregon Ducks. The Ducks lead by as many as 12 late in the first half. Other than a brief 30 seconds, Cal did not hold a second-half lead until there were just over seven minutes remaining in the game. Cal ended up outscoring the Ducks 41-22 in the second half and outrebounding them 29-15 in the period.
Senior forward Alexis Gray-Lawson scored 23 points, making five of her six three-point attempts. Gray-Lawson also drew the defensive assignment of guarding Taylor Lilley, Oregon's top scorer. Lilley was held to just 8 points and was completely shut out in the second half.
Freshman forward Gennifer Brandon's rebounding, especially her defensive efforts in the second half, were a huge factor in the Cal victory. Brandon pulled in 16 boards. It was the second highest total rebounds by a Cal player in a game this season with Brandon's 21 rebound performance against UC Davis the only higher single-game total.
Freshman forward DeNesha Stallworth scored a game-high 28 points. She was a perfect 10-for-10 from the freethrow line, making eight of those in the second half. Stallworth has made 14 consecutive freethrows, dating back to the second half of the regular-season finale against Stanford. Freshman guard Layshia Clarendon, who did not go to the line in the game, has a streak of nine consecutive freethrows made.
Cal has won nine of their last 12 games with two of the three losses coming against the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal.
