Bruin Men Have Strong First Day At Cal/Nevada Championships

The Bruin men started off the Cal/Nevada Championships strong on Saturday as multiple athletes advanced to event finals on Sunday, while Nelson Rosario was a double event scorer in the long and high jump.

Rosario was second in the long jump with a mark of 23-8 and fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 6-8.75. Carlo Valdes picked up team points in the javelin as he placed sixth with a mark of 179-2.

Spencer Knight was second in the steeplechase final, running 9:08.56. In the 5000m, Zack Torres ran a lifetime-best of 14:38.64 to finish third overall.

In prelim events, Randall Carroll (running out of lane nine) posted the third-fastest time of the day (10.60) to advance to Sunday's final. He also ran the second-fastest time in the 200m (21.37) to advance to the finals.

Also in the 200m prelims, Maxwell Dyce ran a lifetime-best 21.30 for the No. 1 qualifier into the finals. Karlton Rolle was third (21.40), giving the Bruins three sprinters in the 200m final.

Cory Primm posted the third-fastest 800m time in the prelims rounds (1:52.59) to advance to the finals. Steven Norton was eighth overall (1:53.72) as he also advances to Sunday's final.

The Cal/Nevada Championships continue on Sunday with field event finals in the triple jump, women's high jump, men's pole vault, shot put and discus. All running events will also be finals.
