Cats Come Up Short

PALO ALTO, Calif. –The No. 32-ranked University of Arizona men’s tennis team dropped their third consecutive match of the season and their second conference match of the weekend.  The team fell to the No. 15-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 6-1 today at the Taube Tennis Center.  The Wildcats came up short in doubles and in five of their six singles matches.


“We had our chances again today, said assistant coach Tom Lloyd. “Stanford just played better than us when those opportunities presented themselves.”


In doubles action, Stanford swept the Wildcats in all three doubles matches. The No. 2-ranked-ranked duo of Ryan Thacher and Bradley Klahn topped No. 55-ranked Wildcat pair of Pat Metham and Borja Malo 8-6 in the No. 1 slot.  Stanford clinched the doubles point on court two after No. 30-ranked Alex Clayton and Richard Wire defeated junior Geoff Embry and senior Ravid Hazi 8-5.  In the third doubles match, Wildcat duo of Andres Arango and Andres Carrasco fell short to Cardinal pair Denis Lin and Matt Kandath 8-6.


In singles competition the Cardinal took the early 2-0 lead with wins on courts one and six.  In the No. 1 position, No.8-ranked Klahn topped Jay Goldman 6-1, 6-2, and Stanford’s Greg Hirschman then defeated Hazi 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 6 slot.  The Wildcats then picked up their lone point in singles competition on court two after Arango downed No.35-ranked Clayton 6-3, 6-3. After that the Cardinal clinched the win on court three after Carrasco fell to No. 65-ranked Thacher on court three in two sets, 6-1, 6-4.  In the No. 5 position, Embry fell in a close match to Lin. After dropping the first set 2-6, the junior battled back and won the second set 7-5 but fell in a 1-0 tiebreaker. Sophomore Jason Zafiros came up short in three sets to Wire.  The Bradenton, Fla. native won his first match 6-2, but then dropped his next two 6-3, 6-2. 


Arizona drops to 11-7, 0-2, while the Cardinal upped their record to 12-3, 1-0.


The Wildcats will return home next weekend to host Washington and Oregon on April 2 and April 4. The Cats play their next five matches at home at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
