Chambers Hits Two Homers in Rout

March 27, 2010

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Stacie Chambers hit two homers to lead Arizona to a 10-2 win over New Mexico in front of 1,575 at Lobo Field on Saturday.

Chambers, the reigning NCAA home run champion, put two shots to opposite field - one during UA's four-run second and the other, a two-run homer down the line in the sixth. She finished the game with three RBI.

Meanwhile, the Wildcat offense scattered 14 hits off UNM (10-18) pitching with Brittany Lastrapes, Lauren Schutzler, Lini Koria and Alicia Banks each nabbing a pair.

The Lobos jumped on the board first after UA pitcher Sarah Akamine (10-1) was called for four illegal pitches in the first frame, with three of them resulting in balks. Head Coach Mike Candrea was ejected after a long discussion with first base umpire John Baca following an illegal pitch call that scored UNM leadoff hitter Cristin Anderson.

After the ejection, Akamine was called for the infraction only once more.

UA (27-3) responded with four runs in each of the next two innings.

Chambers led off the second with her first blast of the game, then Koria went yard an out later. Three base hits and an out later, Schutzler singled past relief pitcher Kari Gutierrez (2-5) to score two more and make the margin 4-1 in favor of the Cats.

In the third, Chambers singled to lead off and was brought home by Koria's double. Kristen Arriola knocked her in with a single, and Alicia Banks hit her first home run of the season to left field with two outs, making the score 8-1.

Akamine struggled a bit in the fifth, allowing an Anderson triple and an RBI double by Jessica Lujan-Dresslar with one out, but got two groundouts to end the inning at 8-2.

Chambers hit her second home run of the day with two out in the UA sixth, after Lauren Schutzler drew a one-out walk.

Akamine finished the game with two strikeouts and five hits against.

The same trio of UNM pitchers each saw action and Samantha Gatson lasted the longest with four innings of work.

Arizona will finish the three-game set with New Mexico tomorrow at Noon (11 a.m. Tucson time), a change from the originally scheduled 1 p.m. game.
