Stambaugh and Chaplin Honored by Pac-10
March 27, 2010
TUCSON, Ariz. - Oregon State's Makayla Stambaugh was announced as the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and Tanya Chaplin received Pac-10 Coach of the Year Saturday evening at the conclusion of the Pac-10 Championships.
Stambaugh and Chaplin were selected for their respective awards by the conference's head coaches prior to the championship meet.
Stambaugh, a native of Antelope, Calif., was named Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week during the third week of the season, for the week of Jan. 18-24, after scoring what was then a season-high 39.500 and winning four individual titles in a meet at home against Washington. Stambaugh is the third Oregon State gymnast to earn the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year award and the first since Jami Lanz in 2006.
'This is such an honor. I really wasn't expecting anything like this,' Stambaugh said. 'I'm just really excited to be recognized for such an award.'
For Chaplin, this is the fourth time in her career that she's been recognized by her peers as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year. In 2010, the Beavers opened the season 9-0 and were ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation - which was the team's highest ranking since the 1992 season. Chaplin's previous coach of the year awards came in 1999, 2005 and 2008.
'Winning these awards is really a reflection on our entire team,' Chaplin said. 'Without the hard work of these gymnasts and their willingness to be coached and also the work of our other coaches we couldn't earn this kind of recognition.'
