Nineteen Bruins On Opening Day Major League Soccer Rosters

March 28, 2010

Nineteen former UCLA players graced Major League Soccer (MLS) opening day rosters in 2010, the most from any university in the nation. UCLA continues to lead all schools with a total of 55 all-time MLS players.

Seven of those 19 players started in their teams' season openers this week - Jordan Harvey (Philadelphia), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Marvell Wynne (Colorado), Frankie Hejduk (Columbus), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake), and Eddie Lewis (Los Angeles Galaxy). Two others came off the bench to make their MLS debuts - Michael Stephens (Los Angeles Galaxy) and Amobi Okugo (Philadelphia Union).

In addition to the 19 players, there are five UCLA alumni coaching in the league - Seattle Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid, assistant coach Kurt Schmid, and technical director Chris Henderson; Columbus Crew assistant coach Mike Lapper; Los Angeles Galaxy assistant coach Cobi Jones; and Chivas USA Technical Coach Nick Theslof.
