USC Wins At Loyola Marymount, 9-7
March 30, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Junior right-hander Chris Mezger (Boulder, Colo.) came into the first inning in relief Tuesday and threw four scoreless innings and allowed only one hit as the USC Trojans beat the Loyola Marymount Lions, 9-7, at George Page Stadium. USC trailed 4-2 after one inning, but came back with six unanswered runs to hold onto the victory as both teams now have a 13-12 record on the season.
Matt Foat and Adam Landecker both homered for the Trojans. Landecker, the freshman shortstop, tied the game at 4-4 in the second with a two-run homer, his first collegiate home run. USC then scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to give Mezger (3-0) a comfortable lead.
The Lions loaded the bases in the seventh, scoring a run to trail by two runs. Brandon Garcia hit Matt Lowenstein with the pitch to force in the run, but got ahead in the count on Nick Devian and induced a ground ball to end the inning. Chad Smith recorded two strikeouts in the ninth to pick up his first save on the season.
USC hosts No. 21 Oregon State this week in a Pac-10 Conference series, Thursday-Saturday (April 1-3). Thursday and Friday's game will start at 7 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. All three games will be broadcast through a live video webcast on usctrojans.com.
Notes: USC got the leadoff hitter aboard in the first seven innings...the Trojans have won four straight against the Lions.
