Volleyball Opens Spring Practice, Welcomes Greenshirt Defoe
March 30, 2010
Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team opened up spring practice on Tuesday morning in Dixon Recreation Center, while welcoming greenshirt freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) into the mix.
“This is a great opportunity for our young athletes to get valuable playing time in a 6-on-6 environment,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “The hard work that we put in this winter and spring will greatly benefit our team in the 2010 fall season.”
Defoe started classes at Oregon State at the beginning of the spring term on Monday, Mar. 29. She joins former Summit High School teammate and fellow greenshirt Kelsey Zimmerman (Bend, Ore.) on the squad.
“Becky is a very skilled back row player that will help our team in serve receive and backcourt defense,” Liskevych said. “She is an excellent athlete that will add a lot of spark to our practices.”
Defoe, a three-sport athlete at Summit High School, was a three-time letterwinner in volleyball, helping her team to two runner-up finishes and a third place finish at the OSAA 5A Volleyball State Tournament as libero. She earned the Oregon Libero of the Year as a senior after earning the Inter Mountain Conference (IMC) Libero of the Year honor. She was a two-time IMC First Team selection and first team state tournament honoree. And she added two All-State Second Team mentions.
Adding to her success on the volleyball court, Defoe was a three-year letterwinner in softball at catcher and also earned three letters in basketball as a guard. In softball, she earned three IMC honors – second team as a freshman, honorable mention as a sophomore and first team as a senior – adding IMC honorable mention status in basketball as a junior.
